Surgery Day is Here!

Monday June 8th was the big day. Christopher had surgery. We had family in town for the "event". Nana and Papa and Granny and Grandma were all here to help out and keep an eye on the boy.

Sunday, Jim and I sat down and explained what was going to happen to Christopher. He was very calm about the whole thing. He didn't really ask many questions and just seemed to take it all in stride.

Monday morning, we got him up and showered and headed off to the surgery center. He was fine with having nothing to eat or drink. There were plenty of toys for him to play with. They weighed him and measured him. He is 52 pounds and 46 inches tall! (WOW!) Then we changed into our "special pajamas". He wore his little hat although he was not sure why. The nurse came and asked him questions and so did the doctor from anesthsia. They were both amazed at how calm and laid back he was. I told them it was very normal for him. Too soon, they came and took my baby back for surgery. He walked away with a smile and a kiss. What a brave little boy!

Surgery went very well. The doctor only needed to make one incision in his scrotum, no incision in his tummy, so recovery time is MUCH faster! I was so relieved to hear that. Now came the hard aprt of waiting for them to come and get me. I had promised Christopher that mommy and daddy would be there when he woke up. It seemed like FOREVER before the nurse came to get us.

As we went back, I could hear Christopher crying. I did not even need the nurse to direct me to my baby. I knew right where he was. He was having a hard time coming out of the anesthsia. They had to give him some additional drugs to try and calm him down. It was heart breaking to hear my baby crying. They moved him into my lap to try and calm him down some more. We sat and rocked and I talked to me baby. He would settle down and then just start crying all over again and fighting with his IV. Sitting with him was one of the hardest things I have had to do so far in his life. I wanted to take his pain and fear away. I wanted to make it all better, but all I could do was just hold him and try to calm him down. He refused to drink anything, so they could not take out his IV until all the fluids were in. He kept telling me he could not stop crying. I just kept telling him it was all okay. Finally they were able to remove the IV and we got to head home.

We had a nice quiet day. Mommy and Christopher went and crawled into my bed and watched Christopher's favorite movie...Transformers. What a day! I am just glad it is over.

He is healing well and our biggest problem is keeping him quiet!
