When I was ten almost eleven, my family started having reunions in the mountains of North Carolina. My grandparents found this resort that was pretty cheap and kind of in the middle of all the family. The family met there in 1979 for the first time. It was all the descendants of my grandmother and her three sisters. The MacCarroll clan reunions were born.
When we started meeting there, we spent the week "camping" in cabins. There was no air conditioning, no phones, no TV and anyone under the age of 23 camped out on the floor in a sleeping bag and we loved it! I have some amazing memories of my family from the times on the mountain growing up.
Over the years, the family has grown, the cabins have modernized, but the feeling I get from spending time with my family has not changed. I still look forward to the reunion every two years. I have gone from being the child on the mountain, to being the mom on the mountain. I have watched the grandparents all pass away and now my parents are the grandparents on the mountain. I watch my children running on the mountain and see them falling in love with all the things I enjoyed on the mountain. The traditions are being passed on to the next generation and I love it. Now, in a time where lots of families are falling apart, my family is going strong and we all still love being together.
The twins had an amazing time at the reunion. They were asking to go to the mountain before we went. I was amazed that they remembered being there two years ago, but they did. And that made my heart smile. For us, the tradition continues, the kids are enjoying spending time with family. Hopefully as they grow, they will have many wonderful memories of time spent on the mountain with the family and someday I will be the grandparent on the mountain and the tradition will continue on.
